Juha, the forest here is mixed hardwood and evergreen. Where the broadleaf trees predominate you really do get a thick carpet of leaves in the fall. Where the hemlock and spruce are dominant, there's a permanent thick mat of needles.
I've done a lot of work at Steep Rock in the past with b&w large format film, so working here in color is sort of a new experiment. Either way, I find overcast is essential to portray the deep forest—bright sunlight just doesn't work at all.
Indeed, clouded weather is perfect for taking photographs in/of a forest.
But sometimes it is so that what is good for the photographs may not be good for the photographer.
In November we have often overcast weather for such a long period that it doesn't feel good any more. Last year in Helsinki we got 13 hours of sunlight in November. This year it may be a bit more, but not much.
Beautiful carpet of leaves on the ground, almost unreal. These photographs might work in b&w as well, but I like the muted colors.
