Two from Sunday

Amenia, New York

It's amazing how long the cold, slow Spring season has lasted. Most of the trees are still no where near in full leaf.

Cricket at Cromwell

Cromwell, Connecticut

Cromwell is a small, old, town not far south of the state capital, Hartford. I was exploring the area yesterday hoping to do some pictures in stormy light, though the conditions stayed more of a murky overcast. The faded flag painted on a concrete wall in the town athletic fields caught my eye, along with the large pipes laid out all around the field obviously awaiting a construction project. Then something caught my eye—unusual action by the young men on the baseball diamond. It was quite a double take before I figured out they were playing cricket.

Shop Windows X Two: Number Six

Hudson, New York

I was going to end this mini-series at five, but then I encountered these two additions yesterday, so it continues.

Two Shop Windows

Willimantic, Connecticut

The small central CT city of Windham/Willimantic is struggling, while the town of New Milford in western CT is quite gentrified. The windows seem to show the contrast.

Closed

Bristol, Connecticut

This was a thriving car dealership going back to 1967 (under the last management) but closed in 2004 and has been vacant ever since. It's a large piece of empty space just at the edge of the built-up part of this small city. A quick search turns up documents showing the place was closed largely because of a financing dispute with General Motors, and perhaps because GM wanted to shrink the number of its dealers in the Bristol area.

View Over the Hudson

Poughkeepsie, New York

The forecast for today called for interesting weather—that is, not clear sky and puffy white clouds—so I headed out for a loop that took me into New York State and along the Hudson River under rather threatening skies. Then, when I got to Poughkeepsie, I accidentally located, first a free municipal parking lot right over the river, then an elevator to The Walkway Over the Hudson.

I'd never gotten to this converted railroad bridge over the river before, but found it really fascinating. I'll want to look again in other weather conditions and seasons. More stuff from earlier in the day will show up here soon.

Spring X Two

Thomaston, Connecticut

After a mild winter, April and early May have been much colder than usual here in southern New England, with a result that Spring flowering is subdued, and almost stalled at an early stage. Temperatures have come up into the 70s F finally, so it will be interesting to see how the season progresses.
