Major Repairs

Naugatuck, Connecticut

This highway bridge collapsed after heavy spring rains earlier this year. The collapse closed a large section of the town's athletic fields for the summer. Looks as though it will still be awhile before things are back to normal.

Waterbury, Connecticut

Earlier this month I was playing around with the different formats available on the GF1 camera. When I went to a spot I thought might make a nice 16:9 proportion panorama, I disturbed a city slicker heron who took off and tooled along north up the Naugatuck river.

Unusual Viewpoint

West Haven, Connecticut

There's been a little interruption in the blog posts. I hadn't been feeling well for a little while, and on Tuesday I went to our family practice physician feeling really terrible. From there I was sent by ambulance to the nearest emergency room. Arrhythmia, atrial flutter.  My heartbeat returned to normal, in part from treatment and in part spontaneously, in the ER. I was moved up to a telemetry section for observation and electronic monitoring of heart function. Along with lots of blood draws for chemical monitoring.

I was released around noon today and was lucky to get an appointment later in the afternoon with a highly regarded arrhythmia specialist.  The unusual viewpoint of the post title refers to me being in the passenger seat of a car, on my way to see the doctor. With the crisis over, my heart function is perfectly normal. Except that the arrhythmia could (probably will) return since this is the second incident (see this post from three years ago). So in about a month I will have a procedure that stands a very good chance of permanently eliminating the susceptibility to this problem.

Big Prints

Washington, Connecticut

Early this spring the folks at the Gunn Memorial Museum—a local historical institute—asked me to help them with an exhibit they were assembling. They wanted to make two murals based on the authentic "longhouse" exhibits from the nearby Institute of American Indian Studies. They wanted some really big prints. One wall was about six feet high by fifteen feet long, the other about six feet square.

It was an interesting problem I'd never tried before. I ended up doing the captures with a Pentax K20D and Pentax 35mm macro lens. The long wall was photomerged in Photoshop CS4 from 14 captures, two rows of seven each. The smaller panel was made from two rows three captures across. Then I output the files in 2x3 foot sections with my HP Z3200 printer. Museum staff and volunteers did the actual assembly and installation. While the result is certainly not of the quality I'm used to for exhibition prints, I was pleasantly surprised at just how acceptable the mural installation ended up.

Some Curious Shades of Blue/Green

Thomaston, Connecticut

There's more than faded ink going wrong with this point of purchase display in a liquor store window. But what's really odd is the similarity of color with a patch of newly installed sidewalk several blocks away.

Not the Only Game in Town

Scranton, Pennsylvania

There were artist's openings all over Scranton Friday night, not to mention a jazz festival and other events. But lots of people came by the Camerawork Gallery reception, and these are some snapshots from the evening.
