Albion, New York

Drawbridge...

...over the Erie Canal. It took me a while to figure out the staircase to nowhere. The drawbridges I remember from growing up in New Jersey all levered up from a fulcrum point at one side. This one lifts straight up and pedestrians can still use it in the open position.

Your confusion about the stairway to nowhere cracked me up! As a child growing up in Albion, I used to love to run when I would hear the bell ringing to alert drivers that the bridge was being raised - we would run and climb the stairs so we could go about mid-way across the bridge and stand there looking down at the boats going under the bridge! If we were close enough and quick enough, we'd ride the bridge up, but usually, we'd need the stairways to nowhere! Thanks for triggering some great memories!

Kim, thanks for the note. I can easily picture that childhood game at the drawbridge.
