Trees in Fog
Washington, Connecticut, 12/29/16
A little snow turning to a cold rain, rising fog from the farm fields.

NO SITTING FEE
Bluefield, Virginia
The small town of Bluefield, Virginia, appears devoted to its pets. The storefront on the main road through town seemed to be a combination grooming salon and pet portrait studio. Just around the corner was the sign for another grooming place.

Drain Pipe
Winsted, Connecticut
Part of an old factory complex, originally powered by the nearby river. Like almost all factories around this area, it is partly in deteriorating disuse, partly repurposed as warehouse and office space.

Mail Slot
Torrington, Connecticut
The Yankee Peddler Inn is undergoing renovations, and some of the storefronts on Main Street at the first floor level of the building are boarded up. "Platinum" is a beauty salon that's clear and open for business.
Forecasts
Woodbury, Connecticut
Friday overnight they forecast three inches of snow, and we got ten. I hadn't gotten gas for the snow blower and messed up my back clearing a path out for one of the cars. Last night they forecast 15°, and we got 2°F instead. At least the lines to the darkroom sink are OK.

RICE, BEANS, MEAT
Bristol, Connecticut
Another bad food picture, in a banner ad this time. The typography's pretty awful as well.

New Boiling Seafood
Winsted, Connecticut
If the idea of the pictures is to make the food look appetizing, somehow they missed the boat.

Dandy
Middlebury, Connecticut
Yesterday afternoon. Sure looks like winter. Supposed to get our first really cold weather of the season today and tonight.

Morning Fog
Woodbury, Connecticut
I've always loved "interesting" weather. Over the coming fall and winter I want to make a project of a series of pictures in dramatic weather and light. The goal will eventually be a set of small-to-medium size platinum prints. The shooting will be digital capture to have a maximum of freedom and responsiveness to deal with rapidly changing situations. This first one came right after dawn yesterday. As always here, if you click on the picture area you'll get a larger and better view.

Icon
Princeton, West Virginia
Another mural from Princeton. The painting is primitive, but the rendering of hand gestures is striking. Click in the image area for a larger and more legible view.

Missing Vines
Lexington, Virginia
Took me a moment to figure out if this was some sort of minimalist street art, then I realized someone had simply pulled a climbing vine away from the painted wall.

Guitar and AC
Princeton, West Virginia
Have to wonder about the little air conditioner nestled in the housing of a former unit. Also, what do you call a mural painted on a closed-in window?

The Hills in West Virginia are Steep
Webster Springs, West Virginia
People from other parts of the country are surprised when I mention that we have no horizons in southern New England, unless you go down to Long Island Sound. All you can ever see is the short distance to the next hillside. This is true in West Virginia as well, except even more. The hills are just a lot higher.

Shadows, Warm and Cold
Waterbury, Connecticut
Lots of shadows and darkness going around. I'm going to be interested to print this picture. A nice effect, that probably won't be visible from the sRGB JPEG file on most devices, is the color shift in the shadows. The deep shadow at the bottom is warm in color because it's getting a lot of bounce light from the sunlit brick wall. The shadows on the wall are much colder because they're illuminated only by clear blue sky overhead. The difference is subtle but clear in ProPhoto colorspace on a calibrated display, so I'll be curious to see how much of that I can maintain, ink on paper.
