Customers Only

Torrington, Connecticut

There are shop windows that are worth returning to again and again. This place has been here on the blog before.

Meanwhile, don't miss The Exciting Conclusion, the final post in my WPII Blog March Posting Experiment.

OF MAINE

Shelton, Connecticut

Part of a semi-trailer graveyard, or maybe just mothball fleet out back of a plastics manufacturing company. The factory is open, but from the look of the parking lots the work force can't be at more than 10% or 15% of original planned capacity.

Behind the Post Office

Ansonia, Connecticut

No, I don't have the faintest idea what it's doing there.

Fail

Plainville, Connecticut

"Catchy" church signs and slogans aren't as common in New England as, say, West Virginia, but do run into them from time to time.

2 LARGE CHEESE & 15 WINGS

Bristol, Connecticut

The notion of any group of humans eating the advertised special makes me shudder, but I have actually stopped in and bought a slice of veggie pizza here and it was excellent.

Chevrolet

Bristol, Connecticut

This used to be a really big car dealership. The showroom and service bays covered the equivalent of about a city block, and the lots for new and used cars took up acres. All empty now.

Don't forget, daily postings from the Waterbury 'Gentle Light' series continue at the WPII Blog.

Eclectic Collections

Bristol, Connecticut

I've posted pictures at least once before from this store, but have never managed to find it open. I want to talk to the proprietors and I'm sure more posts will result if I do.

Blue Tarp

Bristol, Connecticut

There's quite a bit of urban renewal going on in Bristol, but a lot of vacancy as well.

Faded Pictures

Waterbury, Connecticut

Some years ago I was surprised to find that some very nice bread available in my local grocery store came from the "Brooklyn Bakery." Brooklyn, NY, is a hundred miles south of here, and seems a bit of a stretch to supply a small IGA so far off. It turned out that the bakery was located in the Brooklyn district of Waterbury, only fifteen miles from my local store. Not many businesses, or storefronts, seem to be functional in the Brooklyn district as of March, 2009, and I have to wonder about this little portrait and wedding studio as well.

ICE

Waterbury, Connecticut

The only car in the parking lot looks like it's been there a while, and it won't be getting any company until the temperature comes up.

For Lease

Torrington, Connecticut

It had been a bar or tavern in its last incarnation, and probably many before. The other side of the street is a factory complex several blocks long. The workers were probably the source of business at shift changes, before the factory closed.

STOP

Torrington, Connecticut

This is a T-intersection and the buildings on all three corners are vacant and boarded up. Not likely to find occupants any time soon.

Winter Walking

Winsted, Connecticut

Nasty winter day for a walk, but puppy and grandchild seemed to be enjoying it. I was struck that so many of the few bright spots of color along Main street on this dark day were flags or flag-based poster displays.

Closed

Winsted, Connecticut

This little store and repair shop seemed to have been on Main street forever, though the sign says it was actually twenty-five years.

Hot Bar Keep

Torrington, Connecticut

Meanwhile, in another galaxy far away, the dormant WPII blog has come back to life. For the month of March (maybe longer) there will be a new picture every day along with some words, all from a related group of photographs. If you enjoy stopping by this blog, be sure to link over and watch the developments at WPII.
