Thanks, Markus. Generally, I don't like what most things look like under a clear sky with harsh sunlight. When I try to shoot in those conditions I often come back with nothing. Then sometimes, it all comes together. On this shoot I was actually thinking that I should "practice more" by intentionally trying to work with light I don't like and see what I could do with it.
We share this aversion, Carl. But winter does help here - the lower angle of the sun provides those beautiful shadows and additionally makes the light quite a bit softer due to the longer distance it travels through the atmosphere (which again contains more diffusing pollutants when it's colder)
Training certainly helps (I repeat this too myself not often enough), and good results make it easier :)
