Elevator with a Mirror

New York, New York

I'm lucky to have friends with an apartment in a hi-rise on the east side in the nineties, and they let me have a key and sleep on the sofa. Believe me, if I had to stay in a hotel in New York to teach the workshop at CAP, it couldn't happen because the hotel would get half of my "honorarium." But take a look at that button panel. It's just about the most confusing thing I've ever seen. When I'm alone, the doors usually close and I stand there in silence trying to figure out how to push "5". When someone enters the elevator with me, they usually say something like, "which floor you want, buddy?" They live there, and still find it confusing.

HOT DOG, General Sherman!

On the way from the parking lot to The Armory for the AIPAD show. I found the displays a bit more interesting than usual yesterday. There were some changes in the dealers' orientation, I thought. For one thing, there was the usual plethora of vintage old stuff—how many AA "Moonrises" can you find?—but a lot more work from the 1960s-70s era. Some booths looked like living embodiments, in real prints, of the photo magazines I grew up with. There also seemed to be a welcome cut back in the number of ugly gargantuan over-enlarged prints of crushingly dull subjects. They were still there, but far fewer in number than the past couple shows. Maybe that fad is trending down.
