The name of the nice guy made of tires is BIBENDUM. He was born at the World Exhibition 1984 in Lyon/France as a merchendising puppet for Michelin-tires. When I was a young boy, I remember Bibendum sitting on the roof of big french trucks, enlightend by night.

The World Exhibiton was at 1894, sorry!
I thought that must be a typo--thanks for the clarification.
