I like the implied layers in the second image. The reflected world is a virtual image located below the road surface, and we know the utility pipes to occupy the same space at the same time.
Also, the utilities flowing below ground and the pedestrian movements above ground are both signified with paint marks on the self-same surface. Neat.
actually, to me the tapered crosswalk section looks like a diving board, since it appears to end before you reach safety on the other side of the intersection, leaving a last desperate leap.
For me this pair works based on the strong graphics and an assumed relationship of overview/detail, emphasizing different aspects of the crosswalk color and the asphalt. The edge in the crosswalk is really unusual...
