There's an saying that "the haze is so thick you could cut it with a knife." It applies.

Don't you love/hate those days when you set up the shot and then wait for the sun to shine through the "partly cloudy" on to the right spot. If it ever does. Was standing next to my tripod the other day when someone walked by and asked what I was waiting on. For the sun to hit the right spot, I replied.

David, yes, that's pretty much what was happening with these. No spectators though.
