For some reason I got the sense the figure is St. Patrick, but there was no identification plaque that I could find.

I guess you are right, Carl - this looks like the statue is holding a shamrock in the right hand, clearly an indication for St. Patrick.

Markus, I must have registered the shamrock subliminally. I want to do some research about Newburgh. This Broadway section is heavily hispanic now—not just the bilingual signs but shop windows advertising specialties from Peru, Ecuador, etc—but this church has been there a long time and at some point it could have been a mainly Irish district. It will be interesting to look into that.
