Studies in Green and Brown, II

Washington, Connecticut

The blog is going back into the woods for the next few days. Some of the trees have bark that is the most amazing perfect neutral gray. Wonderful to play off against the intense greens and browns.

Little accents of near-white. Tiny branches of the black birch up close, and way back across the river, large bare branches of hemlock covered with a thick layer of white lichen.

Steep Rock is a preserve, not primordial nature, but the Trustees' stewardship uses a very light touch. Except to keep the trails open, fallen trees are left to a natural progression of decay and eventual renewal. There are a lot of fallen trees because much of the soil is very thin, lying over rock ledge and glacial jumble.
