Final Days

Buffalo, New York

The Buffalo Drive-in Theater was one of the last to survive right inside the limits of a large city. The fields were surrounded by industrial and residential buildings. But the theater closed in 2007, shortly after I made these pictures.

I have followed and enjoyed your work on Drive-In Theatres for a couple of years, and the photographs always bring back fond memories. My uncle's family operated a Drive-In in southwest Virginia, and lived in a long, narrow house built into the base of the screen. As a kid, it was a thrill to spend the night with them and sleep inside the screen! Thanks--

Hi Edd,

From your description and the location in southwest VA, I suspect you are talking about The HiLand Drive-in, which I photographed in 2003. The owners at that time had done extensive remodeling and the interior living space was astonishing. I will look up the material and do a blog post on it tomorrow. Please stop by and let me know if it's the one you knew as a kid.

I also love the old drive-in shots. I live near one in Hudson Falls on Dix Ave, I think the only thing left is the ticket office. The town bought the property but had big trouble doing anything because the soil was polluted with PCBs from the oil they laid down to control the dust over the years.
My wifes family used to own the one in South Glens Falls on Rte 9called the Aust Drive in.

The second photo is really a "must-click-on-and-dive-into-the-vast-open-space-in-the-foreground" - it is simply brilliant. A photo for the eye to sink in and linger.

(Hey, I am doing metaphors in a foreign language, so ... ;-))

And very nicely too, Martina. :-)
