Exhibit Announcement: The American Drive-in Theater

The Camerawork Gallery is presenting an exhibition of selections from my Drive-in Theater project during the month of September. The show went up yesterday, and has pictures of 16 theaters from 12 states, selected from approximately 250 theaters I've photographed since 1998. Next Saturday I'll give a slide presentation with many more theater pictures, a timeline/history of the drive-in, stories and anecdotes from my many interviews with drive-in theater owners and managers, and a Q&A period. Followed by a reception in the gallery space.

Camerawork is the oldest continuously operated fine art photography gallery in the United States, founded in 1970. The exhibition space is located at the Lorenzen Conference Center, Legacy Emanuel Medical Center Campus, 301 N. Graham Street, Portland, Oregon 97227.

Congratulations, Carl! I hope the show is a great success. Sadly, it’s a little too far away for me to make it.

Thanks David!

Is there any chance of seeing this exhibit local to Connecticut? Or has it already been exhibited here? Thanks.

Ed, this exhibit is a one-off but it's quite possible there will be a show of DI project work more local to CT, though there's nothing specific planned. If you're just curious about the project, there are two large galleries of theater pictures on the Online Galleries page at my web site (www.carlweese.com). Not the same as looking at real prints, but a useful substitute.

Congratulations, Carl! From all I know this is a great body of work, and I do hope that it find the audience it deserves.

The header image of course is my favourite and the Pt/Pd print highly appreciated - and it is of a timeliness certainly not anticipated at the time of the exposure.

Thanks, Markus. Of course in December 2001 the intent of the marquee message was quite clear, but now it might seem to be invoked for threats internal as well as external.

BTW, it's interesting to note that despite most folks assumptions when they see the picture, The Pike was only closed for the winter season, not shut down. It is up and running this past summer and is planning a Halloween special event according to a notice I just saw in The Speakerpost group on Facebook.
