Heat and Humidity

New Haven, Connecticut

New Haven, Connecticut

The amazing wave of hot humid conditions continues in southern New England. The haze is so thick you could cut it with a knife. This is what it looked like from Long Wharf in New Haven today around noontime.

Working Pictures: The Pennsylvania Series

[As always, you can click on the picture, or poster in this case, to get a larger, more legible version.]

Earlier this year, the folks at Camerawork Gallery invited me to have a late summer show in their Scranton, Pennsylvania, gallery. I was intrigued by a very simple display approach they had been using as an alternate to traditional mats and frames for photographic prints. They've got walls, and they've got thirty sheets of 11x14-inch Plexiglas. Simplicity itself. This appealed to me right away as a way to show some of what I've been doing on this blog, but now as ink-on-paper prints rather than pixels on a screen.

So, how to choose which of the nearly 2,000 pictures that have appeared here? The thought came to me of narrowing the selection down to pictures made in the state of Pennsylvania. There was still a large selection, partly because I did a lot of digital capture photography around the state on road trips associated with my 2007 Camerawork show, "Coal Country." I hope some of you can stop by for the reception on Friday, August 6, from 6:00 to 8:30 PM. For a little more information about the show and a peek at some of the pictures included, head over to the Camerawork Exhibition web page.

Several astute observers have noted that the pictures in recent postings here at WP have reverted from the expected 2:3 proportion to the 4/3s proportion seen at the beginning of the blog. No, I haven't gone back to using the Olympus E1, but in fact last week got a Micro 4/3s Panasonic GF1 with 20mm f/1.7 and EVF. You can see it in this picture. I'm learning to use it, and finding a lot of interest in the new form factor and the camera's performance.

They wouldn't have stacks of them displayed in expensive refrigerated cases if people didn't buy them. The "Nutrition Facts" section is bad enough, but the list of ingredients...it may be better not to see it all the way to the end.

Find the Fawn

Bridgewater, Connecticut

Early this morning we were at the house where my wife grew up. I took a walk in the woods and encountered this little fellow. That camouflage is pretty effective even in full green summer.
