Flood Waters

Canaan, Connecticut

The flat land in the foreground is normally a large field in the floodplain of the Housatonic River. Yesterday it was completely flooded. Spring rains and winter melt-off have left all the rivers at or near flood stage for weeks now.

I think the water may have been over the road at some point Saturday night.

As an addendum to my recent post about the unfortunate passing of Brunhilde, this was the first shakedown cruise for her replacement.

Carl, I like when the opening buds and unfurling leaves provide a touch of spring color, but still leave the structure of the trees visible. You have captured that nicely in the top photo. And congratulations on the new vehicle!

Thanks, Edd. Very, very, early spring is really my favorite time of the year for landscape pictures.

in Jersey, we would have built houses on that floodplain then complained about the rising waters...

Carl,
Sorry to hear about Brunhilde. But 244,000 miles is a pretty good run. My wife and I share an HHR as a utility vehicle and travel car. We like it a lot. Despite its looks, it is not a truck, so it might not go where Brunhilde did. We get 24 mpg around town and 30 on the road. Enjoy another 200,000 miles!

Best, Jim Weekes

Jim, thanks for the feedback. I'm going to miss the wonderful truck, but everything is always a compromise. I'll certainly get much better mileage, can use 'passenger car only' parkways, won't have to drive a mile or more after spotting a subject before finding a place to turn around on a country road...good and bad points to everything.
