Light and Shadow

New York, New York

Around four o'clock on a winter afternoon, looking down the ramp of an underground parking garage on East 30th street. This isn't direct sunlight—that's why there's an odd multiple shadow effect. The sun, low in the sky to the west, is reflecting off multiple glass and metal surfaces across the street, behind the camera.

In New York, you get strange shadows. With a brilliant early morning sun, and a correct angle, the shadows of the trees in Central Park face east due to the reflection from the Time Warner Building at the SW corner of the park.

the other thing that strikes me, is the round shadow, right side, 2/3 way up. It reminds me of what you say about 'waiting for something to complete the picture' when you are out and about. What is that? Is it the photographer looking around the corner at us?

I think the round shape is a convex, wide-view, mirror mounted on the edge of the entry. Shadows and light sources can be mysterious in the city.

Very ethereal Carl! I like the simplicity of the composition.

Thanks, John. What I like most going on here is that these heavy materials—brick, poured concrete, metal pipes—have in fact been made ethereal by the light.
