Two Walls

Albemarle, North Carolina

I'd guess this must have been an effort to cover up graffiti. Could have a better job matching the paint though. Oddly I saw this only on one block in this fairly large town. Makes me wonder what and why about the covered-up tags.

I love the images - and I don't want to worry about the motives in this covering-the-tags. The patterns of the patches, craft-wise certainly debatable, together with some elements of the environment, with the play of the shadows in the first one or the contrast to the flowers in the 2nd make these pictures work for me in the sense that they get me looking, at least for a moment living in the image.

Thanks, Markus. They certainly demanded to be presented as a pair. I might even explore using a diptych presentation in print form.

A little bit like theatre screens.

I think we once talked about the "new" street art of covering-the-tags.

Ha, found it:

"While city workers’ paint jobs are compared to the works of abstract masters such as Mark Rothko ... "

Thanks, Martina. It's funny that the reviewer doesn't seem entirely sure whether the short documentary is straight, satirical, or a hoax. Maybe all three...

If it was gang tagging, it's customary to paint over it.
