Heading into Newark

Wayne, New Jersey

Airliner banking over for the approach.

You must have been north of EWR, where the flights often turn into the final approach over Teterboro, close to the airport. If you came up the Jersey turnpike from the south you can sometimes see 4-5 airliners all spaced out nicely and lined up for the final. This procession starts somewhere south of the Robbinsville VOR, which is about level with New Brunswick

Just a guess, really. Wayne is north of all three NYC-area airports, but the steepness of the plane's turn--a few moments later it disappeared straight into that central dark cloud--made me think it had to be headed for Newark rather than either of the other two.
