HABITAT ENHANCEMENT

Ruskin, Florida (vicinity)

The large coal-fueled power plant at Big Bend dominates many views around the Ruskin vicinity with its constant stream of scrubbed exhaust. In winter, manatees gather in a protected area where the water is warmed by the plant's waste heat. Another interesting tidbit is that the plant produces gypsum as one component of what gets scrubbed out of the emissions, and it's pure enough that a wallboard manufacturer has built a plant nearby to use it.
