NO ETHANOL

Newberry, South Carolina

I saw these "no ethanol" signs on my western trip early this summer, in oil producing states like Oklahoma and Texas, but was surprised to see one in South Carolina a couple months ago. I didn't notice any pro-ethanol signs in Nebraska or Iowa, though I did see that I could buy 85% ethanol fuel there. It was significantly cheaper than gas, but since I understand you get significantly fewer miles per gallon I didn't experiment with it, even though my 2011 car is flex-fuel. The combination of signs here is troubling. This isn't about fostering a local product, but would seem to seek divine intervention on behalf of the troops protecting "our" middle eastern oil. Pretty creepy. The spelling is a gift.

This is one of the strangest sign texts I have seen, and indeed, the murky thinking and the spelling seem to belong together.

The gas guzzler drawn up at the storefront on the left is also in keeping with the "drill baby drill" theme.
