What I really like about this picture is the cigarette butts, the discarded flyer, the light spilling up the steps and the decorative band on the building above the sign, all brought together by the red standpipe with its "Siamese connection" This is a good one, Carl.

Thanks, Edd. I think what works about it for me is that it is simple--prosaic--and complex at the same time.

But the hydrant itself is kind of ugly, isn't it?

Right now I am reading the German wikipedia article about hydrants - so many regulations ... and there is an openmap project Fire Hydrants ... oi.

That map is fun. Oddly, when I zoomed in for a closer look, I landed right in the middle of Bayreuth...

The guy who started this project is from Nürnberg and that's where the map's centre is located. You seem to have been drifted a little bit north ;-)

I was just using the two-finger slide on the touchpad of my MacBook, not trying to be precise about hitting the center. Now I can go look up some fun facts about fireplugs.
