Stubborn Leaves

Washington, Connecticut

Winter light under an overcast sky Tuesday afternoon, along the Shepaug at Hidden Valley. Just a few trees here and there have kept a set of brown leaves. They may be one species but I haven't had a chance to identify them.

I'd guess, a young Beech sapling (Fagus species). They do have that tendency to cling on to dry leaves through the winter, and the leaf shape and general habit are not dissimilar to the ones that are common in UK woodlands - used widely here, for hedging too.

Richard,
Tina, who grew up around here and learned such things as a child, says it's black birch. Quite common, but considered pretty much a junk tree since they never grow big enough to be "useful" for much. Pretty though.

We have a lot of beech trees in the woods around me (SE PA). Yours looks kinda like this one:
