Contemporary Service, Traditional Service—and Lightning

Whiting, Vermont

I was making a "straight" photograph of the church, which is a real New England classic, with the 8x10 Deardorff when a man pulled into the drive in a pickup truck. He asked if I was photographing the lightning damage. I said I didn't know about any lightning, but that it was a beautiful church. "Well you know this is going to be it's 200th anniversary, next month, but it was just hit by lightning. Praise the Lord the structure isn't damaged. The lightning rods weren't all hooked up right so there was some damage to the steeple and some of the electrical systems, but it's mostly all right."

My first thought upon seeing the 'real people, real faith' sign' was, what ever happened to Strand's New England?
